Seasonal Allergies: Looking Beyond the Allergen
This month, we’re taking a deeper look at seasonal allergies and the homeopathic concept of inherited tendencies that may influence how our bodies respond to allergens and how we can approach this homeopathically.

This month, we’re going to do a bit of a deep dive.
I want to tell you about a homeopathic approach I use to help support people who struggle with seasonal allergies. But before I explain the regimen, we need to back up a little, because understanding why we use these remedies is just as important as knowing what to take.
What Did You Inherit?
We all recognize that certain characteristics run in families.
“Her toes look just like Grandpa’s.”
“She has Aunt Millie’s eyes.”
We readily accept that we inherit physical characteristics from our ancestors. But what about our tendencies toward certain patterns of illness?
In homeopathy, we look not only at the symptoms a person is experiencing today, but also at patterns that may appear across generations. This concept is sometimes called a genetic predisposition or an inherited susceptibility to particular patterns of imbalance or illness.
Tuberculosis is one historical example.
Generations ago, tuberculosis could progress unchecked and result in prolonged illness and admission to a sanatorium. Today, modern medicine has dramatically changed the course of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis. However, from a homeopathic perspective, we may still look for patterns in descendants that resemble aspects of an ancestral tendency—not tuberculosis itself, but recurring patterns involving the respiratory or immune systems.
For one person, that pattern might include frequent bouts of bronchitis during the winter. For another, it might appear as troublesome spring allergies or hay fever every fall.
Rather than looking only at the allergen—ragweed, pollen, mold, grasses, and so forth—homeopathy asks another question:
Why does this person's body react so strongly to something another person's body tolerates without difficulty?
This Is Where Bacillinum Comes In
One remedy homeopaths have used when this pattern is present is Bacillinum, a homeopathic remedy associated with a tubercular genetic predisposition.
In my practice, I sometimes use Bacillinum as part of a seasonal regimen.
Rather than waiting until allergy or winter symptoms appear, this approach aims to address the person's underlying susceptibility.
I typically have clients begin in late October and continue through March, taking the remedies on alternating weeks. Depending on the individual and their history, we may repeat this over more than one season.
Clients have reported fewer seasonal illnesses while following this regimen. Individual experiences vary, of course, and one person's response doesn't predict another's.
Think of It as Changing the Pattern
Here's one way I like to picture it.
Newton's first law of motion tells us that an object in motion tends to remain in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.
Imagine that the “object in motion” is an established pattern in your health.
Every spring, the trees bloom—and your eyes itch.
Every August, ragweed appears—and the sneezing begins.
Every winter, respiratory illnesses seem to settle into your chest.
The specific trigger may change, but your body seems to follow the same familiar path.
From a homeopathic perspective, the goal isn't simply to suppress the reaction each time. We want to ask whether we can influence the underlying susceptibility that keeps producing the same pattern.
That's the idea behind using remedies such as Bacullinum as part of a broader constitutional or genetic predisposition approach.
Why Start in the Fall?
This isn't intended to be a quick remedy taken when your eyes are already watering, and you're reaching for the tissues. It's a longer-term approach.
For the clients for whom I determine this regimen is appropriate, I generally begin in late October and continue through March. I may recommend repeating the regimen over subsequent years, depending upon the person's response and overall health picture.
And that's an important distinction: not everyone with seasonal allergies needs the same homeopathic approach.
Your symptoms, health history, family history, and overall pattern matter.
If seasonal allergies arrive like clockwork every year—or respiratory illnesses follow the same pattern season after season—this may be worth exploring.
If you're interested in whether this approach might be appropriate for you, let's talk about how we can change this pattern in your life.
