Summer Survival: Natural Support for Summer Complaints

Summer brings so many wonderful things—lake days, vacations, sunshine, backyard gatherings, slower mornings, and more freedom in our schedules. But along with all of that fun often comes bee stings, bug bites, sunburns, swimmer’s ear, questionable food choices, and the occasional “travel tummy.” While summer adventures are part of making memories, having a few simple natural tools on hand can help families feel more prepared and less stressed when these common complaints pop up.

Bee stings and bug bites are almost a rite of passage during the summer months. For many people, the discomfort is mild, but swelling, redness, itching, and irritation can quickly turn an otherwise beautiful day into a miserable one. Simple things like cold compresses and soothing herbal preparations can often bring comfort. Homeopathic remedies such as Apis are frequently used for swelling, redness, and stinging discomfort, while Ledum is commonly considered for puncture-type bites and insect bites. One of my favorite summer staples for irritated skin, minor cuts, scrapes, and inflamed areas is Calendula. Calendula tincture, diluted appropriately, can be wonderfully soothing to the skin, and homeopathic Calendula can provide additional support for skin healing from the inside out.

Sunburns are another common summer issue. Even with good intentions, it’s easy to spend a little too much time in the sun during vacations, sporting events, gardening, or long days at the lake. Skin that becomes overheated, inflamed, and painful benefits from gentle support, hydration, and rest. Aloe vera, cooling compresses, and extra mineral and fluid support can all be helpful. Homeopathic remedies such as Cantharis are often considered for burning discomfort or blistering, while Belladonna may be useful when the skin feels intensely hot, red, and inflamed. Calendula again becomes one of those versatile remedies I keep nearby all summer long because of its soothing support for irritated skin.

Summer travel and schedule changes also tend to bring digestive upset. Rich foods, eating out more often, dehydration, irregular sleep, and unfamiliar environments can all contribute to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, or constipation. Sometimes it’s simply too much “vacation food,” while other times families encounter true food poisoning or viral stomach illnesses while traveling. During these times, rest, hydration, electrolytes, bland foods, and occasionally activated charcoal can be supportive when appropriate. Homeopathic remedies such as Arsenicum album are often considered for food poisoning-type symptoms with vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, or burning sensations, while Nux vomica is commonly used when digestive distress follows overindulgence or dietary excess.

Swimmer’s ear also becomes much more common during the summer months as children and adults spend more time in pools and lakes. Sometimes, simply keeping the ears dry after swimming and avoiding ear canal irritation can help prevent problems before they begin. Similisan and Hyland both have homeopathic ear drops that can be helpful in these situations.

Travel itself can place stress on the nervous system and digestion, especially for children. Long car rides, flying, overstimulation, poor sleep, unfamiliar foods, and disrupted routines can leave both kids and adults feeling exhausted and run down. I often encourage families to think ahead before traveling by packing a few simple remedies, prioritizing hydration and minerals, and allowing space for extra rest whenever possible. Sometimes a little preparation can make a tremendous difference in how smoothly a trip unfolds.

One of the things I love most about natural support is that it encourages us to slow down and pay attention to what our bodies need. Often, the basics matter more than we realize—hydration, nourishing foods, rest, sunshine in moderation, mineral support, and simple remedies used thoughtfully. Summer doesn’t need to be perfect to be meaningful. A little preparation can go a long way toward helping families enjoy the season with more confidence and less stress.

If you’d like support in putting together a personalized summer kit or guidance on travel or acute summer concerns, I’d love to help.
